Google Adwords isn’t just for banner ads and images. You can also incorporate video ads through your AdWords network. By setting up your video advertisements on YouTube, they can appear across a number of different websites and locations. Here is a brief overview of understanding, creating, and using video ads with AdWords: AdWords Videos and the TrueView Format.

The TrueView format of AdWords videos allows you to create video advertisements to appear in different locations throughout YouTube and the Google Display Network. With TrueView, you can create a video of whatever length or style that you chose, including traditional commercial-style videos, a video endorsing your company, or a how-to video explaining how to use one of your products. TrueView has a unique payment approach, ensuring that you do not pay for ads that haven’t been viewed. With the TrueView format, AdWords will only charge you when your video has been watched to a certain length or the viewer interacts with your ad, such as clicking through to your website.

Placement of AdWords Videos

Within the TrueView format of videos, there are actually three different placements that you can design your video for: in-stream, in-search, on in-display.

In-Stream: An in-stream video will appear at the beginning, the middle, or the end of a YouTube video. With an in-stream video, your viewer may decide to skip the ad after 5 seconds of watching. If they do this, you are not entitled to pay. Once the video reaches the 30-second mark or plays all the way through, you will not be charged.

In-Search: In-search video ads work similar to a standard Google search. You can pay to have your video appear at the top of specific keyword results. When someone decides to select your video to watch, you will be charged.

In-Display: With an in-display ad video, your advertisement will appear at the top of the “similar videos” list to the side of a video the viewer is watching. If they decide to watch your video, you will be charged.

Videos for Google Adwords allows you to play with different formats, lengths, and placements. Like any other advertising pathway, experimenting with different video styles is the best way to see what kind of return you can get on your investment.
